Sony has officially announced the RX1R III, the highly anticipated third-generation model of its legendary RX1R series. Combining high-resolution imaging, advanced AI-powered autofocus, and a classic ZEISS 35mm F2 fixed lens, the RX1R III redefines what’s possible in a compact full-frame camera.
At the heart of the RX1R III is a 61MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS full-frame sensor, paired with the latest BIONZ XR image processor—a combination that delivers exceptional image clarity, low noise, and a wide dynamic range. Staying true to its lineage, the camera retains the signature ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens, now fine-tuned for enhanced optical performance in a compact, portable body.
Uncompromised Image Quality in a Palm-Sized Form
Engineered for discerning photographers, the RX1R III features anti-reflective sensor coating, no optical low-pass filter, and precise alignment between lens and sensor, ensuring razor-sharp, high-resolution images with a signature look. Whether you’re a professional working in the field or a street photographer on the go, the RX1R III offers the flexibility and power to elevate every shot.
AI-Powered Autofocus and Step Crop Shooting
Inheriting the AI processing unit from Sony’s Alpha series, the RX1R III provides real-time subject recognition and tracking, even when eyes and faces are obscured. With 693 phase-detection AF points covering around 78% of the image area, focus accuracy is lightning-fast and reliable.
Adding to its creative toolset is the Step Crop Shooting function, allowing users to simulate 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm focal lengths—perfect for emulating different primes. When shooting in RAW, these crops can be adjusted post-capture. The lens’s macro mode lets you shoot as close as 20cm, expanding creative versatility.
Creative Looks and Visual Expression
The RX1R III includes twelve Creative Look presets, allowing users to customise colour tone, contrast, sharpness, and more—applicable to both stills and video. Two new presets debut with this release:
- FL2: For a filmic, muted tone with nostalgic colour rendering
- FL3: For bright, vivid expression with punchy saturation
Elegant Build, Intuitive Design
Constructed from magnesium alloy, the RX1R III is light yet robust. The redesigned grip and compact control layout ensure a comfortable, secure hold. The top dials and Multi Interface (MI) Shoe are flush with the body, giving it a seamless, minimalist silhouette.
The XGA OLED viewfinder offers approximately 2.36 million-dot resolution with 0.70x magnification. The USB Type-C port supports fast charging and extended power via USB PD-compatible devices.

The RX1R III is developed under Sony’s “Road to Zero” sustainability initiative, with manufacturing powered by 100% renewable energy. Its packaging uses Sony’s Original Blended Material, reducing plastic waste. It also supports accessibility with screen reader and display magnification features for visually impaired users.
