Beyond Full-Frame: Why Fujifilm’s Newest GFX is Set to Transform Cinematic Storytelling.

The “GFX ETERNA 55” is a filmmaking camera equipped with a large format sensor “GFX 102MP CMOS II HS” and the high-speed image processing engine “X-Processor 5”. In addition to delivering rich gradation and three-dimensional image expression, the camera leverages Fujifilm’s proprietary color reproduction technology cultivated over more than 90 years since its founding, enabling even more diverse visual expression..

The “GFX ETERNA 55” adopts the world’s longest vertical large format sensor for filmmaking cameras and surpasses the image circle of full-frame and Super 35mm formats. It supports five cinema formats: “GF” format for full utilization of the sensor in 4:3 open gate shooting, “Premista”, “35mm”, “ANAMORPHIC(35mm)”, and “Super35”. By attaching bundled mount adapters such as “PL Mount Adapter G”, creators can expand lens choices and pursue diverse visual expressions tailored to their intentions.

Additionally, the camera features Fujifilm’s unique “Film Simulation”, highly acclaimed in the X/GFX series digital cameras, allowing various color tone expressions as if swapping photographic film. The “ETERNA series” of cinema color negative film, beloved by legendary cinematographers in Hollywood, is digitally reproduced, and all 20 types of film simulations are available for filmmaking. Up to 16 LUT (Look Up Table) files defining color information can be loaded, enabling unified color management from shooting to post-production and providing an efficient filmmaking environment.

Innovative visual expression produced by the 44 x 33 large-format sensor

  • Equipped with the 102MP large format sensor “GFX 102MP CMOS II HS”. In addition to “GF” format with G mount lenses, by attaching the bundled “PL Mount Adapter G”, it supports all five cinema formats: “Premista”, “35mm”, “ANAMORPHIC(35mm)”, “Super35”, enabling diverse lens choices and visual expressions. Fully utilizes the advantages of the large image circle, allowing up to 48fps 4:3 open gate shooting.
  • World’s first electronic variable ND filter compatible with a large format sensor. Enables seamless density control from ND0.6 to ND2.1 (0.015 step increments) during video shooting.
  • Newly adopted optical low-pass filter with four-point separation method optimized for a large format sensor, reducing moiré and false colors.
  • “DUAL BASE ISO” with two base ISO sensitivities (ISO800 and ISO3200). Automatically switches base ISO according to lighting conditions, enabling clear images with suppressed noise even in extremely bright or dark environments.

F-Log and Film Simulation 3D LUT supporting workflow from shooting to editing

  • Equipped with “F-Log2” and “F-Log2 C” with a dynamic range of 14+ stops. Records images with rich gradation, leveraging large sensor size, enhancing flexibility in post-production.
  • All 20 types of “Film Simulation” for diverse visual expression. Additionally, 10 types of film simulation conversion 3D-LUT (ITU-R BT.709 compliant) for precise adjustment of color and tone in Log shooting (F-Log2/F-Log2 C) are available. In addition to “ETERNA” and “ETERNA BREACHBYPASS” 3D-LUT announced during development, a total of 10 types–including “PROVIA/Standard”, “Velvia”, “ACROS”– are available for download from the web.
  • Up to 16 types of 3D LUT, including film simulation 3D LUT, can be saved in “GFX ETERNA 55”, allowing shooting while checking preferred looks.

Workflow solutions supporting various codecs and labor-saving

  • The camera supports three Apple ProRes codecs (Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 LT). Proxy shooting, such as Apple ProRes 422 Proxy, is also possible during Apple ProRes shooting. Supports five codecs in total, reducing editing workload and streamlining the entire workflow from shooting to post-production.
  • Offers 4:2:2 10-bit uncompressed data output via HDMI, and up to 8K/30P 12-bit RAW data output.
  • Compatible with the cloud service Frame.io Camera to Cloud. By connecting “GFX ETERNA 55” to the internet, various video files, such as Apple ProRes 422 Proxy, can be directly uploaded to Frame.io, enabling immediate sharing with editing teams at remote locations and dramatically improving workflow efficiency from shooting to editing.

Compact, lightweight body with functionality and operability for a small crew shooting

  • Pursuing a lightweight body of approximately 2.0kg for a small crew or solo shooting. Equipped with 3-inch LCD monitors on both sides of the body, allowing multiple people to change settings or check simultaneously.
  • Multi-function dials on the front of the camera and bundled handle enable control of “focus”, “zoom”, and “iris” of FUJINON G mount lenses. When set to “ND”, precise density adjustment of the electronic variable ND filter is possible via dial control.
  • Bundled with a bright 5-inch external LCD monitor (max 2000nits), it ensures clear visibility even outdoors in sunlight. The monitor supports touch operation, and its multiple mounting positions and adjustable angles provide comfortable shooting in various environments.
  • Equipped with a battery box for a large-capacity “NP-W235” battery, enabling up to 30 minutes of shooting without an external battery. It also supports “hot swap” function, allowing battery replacement without restarting the camera by supplying power from “NP-W235” during external battery exchange.
  • Dual slots compatible with CFexpress™ Type B card*7 and SD card. Use of the CFexpress Type B card enables high-speed writing and supports various video formats and bitrates for recording with “GFX ETERNA 55”
