The new FX2 brings full-frame cinematic power and high-res photography to content creators in a compact, versatile body.

Sony has officially announced the FX2 (model ILME-FX2), the newest member of its acclaimed Cinema Line camera series, launching this August in Malaysia. Designed for filmmakers, content creators, and small production crews, the FX2 blends the cinematic look and workflow of Sony’s Cinema Line with the flexibility to shoot 33MP stills, making it an ideal hybrid solution for solo shooters and teams alike.

Kanta Yamamoto, Director of Sony Electronics (Singapore), said: “The FX2 was developed in response to user feedback, combining the creative depth of Cinema Line with enhanced usability and still image performance. It’s built to inspire cinematic storytelling while offering precision and ease for all levels of content production.”

Full-Frame Power and 4K Flexibility

The FX2 features a 33.0MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated sensor that captures stunning video and stills with impressive dynamic range—up to 15+ stops in S-Log3. Dual Base ISO at 800 and 4000 ensures high performance in diverse lighting, with maximum video ISO extending up to 102400 for low-light environments.

It records in 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra formats, supporting XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24.00p, along with a host of flexible codec and resolution options. Built for long shoots, it offers up to 13 hours of 4K 60p recording, thanks to its advanced internal cooling system.

Filmmakers can slow things down with up to 60fps in 4K (2.5x slow motion) and 120fps in Full HD (5x slow motion), plus support for Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO workflows. Custom LUTs (up to 16) can be loaded for precise on-set monitoring, while S-Cinetone™ is set as the default for rich cinematic colour.

Optimised Design for Solo Shooters

With a body design similar to Sony’s FX3 and FX30, the FX2 offers familiar handling and rigging options. It includes three 1/4-20 UNC mounting points for cageless setups and a new top handle (XLR-H1) for enhanced handheld control. Weighing only 679g and compact in size, it’s ideal for travel, gimbal use, or discreet shooting.

Autofocus performance is enhanced with Real-time Recognition AF, which now detects humans, animals, birds, vehicles, and even insects. Additional tools like AF Assist, focus breathing compensation, and customizable AF transitions allow precise control for dynamic scenes.

New image stabilization options include Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode—both exclusive to Cinema Line—providing smoother handheld shots. Auto Framing and Framing Stabiliser features help maintain subject positioning, even with a static tripod or while tracking movement.

Stills and Hybrid Performance

The FX2 stands out with its 33MP still shooting capabilities, making it a powerful tool for hybrid creators. A dedicated MOVIE/STILL lever allows for fast switching between modes, and the updated interface adjusts menu items based on shooting context. With tactile buttons and intuitive controls, operation is quick and efficient.

The FX2 includes a high-resolution 3.68-million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a deep eyepiece for immersive shooting. Paired with a 3.0-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen, it offers flexible composition options from any angle.

Connectivity and Expansion

For pro-level audio, the handle-mounted FX2 includes dual XLR/TRS ports and a 3.5mm mic jack, supporting four-channel 24-bit digital audio. Video output includes HDMI Type-A with up to 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 and 16-bit RAW. For livestreaming or remote production, it features USB-C (10Gbps), dual-band Wi-Fi, and wired LAN support via adapter.

Accessibility and Sustainability

As part of Sony’s ‘Road to Zero’ initiative, the FX2 is manufactured in facilities powered by renewable energy. Accessibility features include a screen reader, display magnification, and a tactile interface, ensuring inclusivity for visually impaired users and creators of all abilities.

Availability The FX2 will be available in Malaysia from August 2025, prices to be announced on a later date.
