It’s time to lead for Canon! The EOS R5 development plan has been unwrapped and it will change the content making landscape with 8K video in the mainstream mirrorless full-frame camera and all your workflow’s hardware too!

In conjunction of the upcoming CP+ Show happening end of this month, it’s timely for Canon to show something (apart from the EOS 1DX III which was announced a month ago), thus, the semi-pro level EOS R series, the EOS R5 making its announcement entry along with two RF lenses, the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM and two Extenders – RF 1.4x and RF 2x. R mount users will get to see a total of 9 RF lenses for 2020 too, rapidly expanding the RF lens family.

Not much information was revealed apart from some specifications to keep our curiosity going. So far what we know about the EOS R5:-
- 8K video
- New CMOS sensor
- 20 FPS electronic shutter (as fast at the 1DX III)
- 12 FPS mechanical shutter
- IBIS
- 2 card slots

The body design is almost the same as the EOS R. We are waiting to see if Canon will do away with the function bar and incorporate the Smart Controller as seen in the 1DX III. So, for now, what we do not know about the EOS R5 are:-
Sensor and processor – It is rumoured that this is a 45MP monster, and if it’s true, shooting continuously for 20 FPS at this resolution is just mind-blowing. This leads us to the next question…
Card slots – Will Canon ditch the SD format and build both CFXpress card slots to handle 8K video recording and fast FPS for RAW and JPEG stills? or 1 CFXpress and one SD slot each or both SD Slots?
8K Video – There is a lot of grey area here. Canon didn’t specifically mention what format is the 8K video and its frame rate. We speculate it may be some entry-level 8K format if Canon wants to keep the camera at a price-friendly level.
Price – Depending on all the final specification revelation, the price is pretty much still under wrapped. But we guess it to be around the RM16k level?

RF Lenses
Alongside the EOS R5, Canon is also developing a total of 9 RF lenses scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.
